UK Government Plans Triple Lock Cut for Care Service
The UK government announced plans to break the state pension triple lock to fund a National Care Service while facing petitions to lower the retirement age.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom announced plans to break the state pension triple lock after the next general election to fund a new National Care Service in England. This move marks a significant structural shift in the UK state pension system.
Andy Burnham confirmed these long-term changes during the Labour Party conference in Liverpool. He also stated that low-income pensioners will not be required to pay income tax during the current Parliament.
Simultaneously, the Government of the United Kingdom must issue an official response to a parliamentary petition started by Michelle Gill. The petition, which surpassed 10,000 signatures, demands that the state pension age be lowered to 65 for all citizens to prevent retiree hardship and increase employment opportunities for younger people. This request comes as the current statutory retirement age is phasing upward from 66 to 67.
