Kenya Aviation Workers End Strike After Return-to-Work Deal

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) ended a two-day strike on September 1, 2026, after signing a return-to-work agreement with the Kenyan government and aviation authorities. The industrial action, led primarily by air traffic controllers, paralyzed operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other major hubs, including Moi, Eldoret, and Kisumu International Airports, resulting in widespread flight cancellations and delays across East Africa.

The dispute focused on the absence of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), delayed salary reviews, and the alleged victimization of union members. Under the new pact, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority committed to immediate CBA negotiations based on parameters issued by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

Transport Minister Davis Chirchir and KAWU Secretary General Moss Ndiema confirmed the resumption of services. Kenya Airways expects to restore normal operations by September 2. While the broader strike has ended, a separate recognition agreement between KAWU and Jambojet remains subject to a pending court decision.
