Glacial Collapse Kills Over 1,200 Across Nepal and China
A catastrophic glacial collapse on the Nepal-China border killed at least 1,273 people and left over 4,700 missing, destroying critical infrastructure and trapping hydropower workers.
A massive bedrock and glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung peak triggered a catastrophic flash flood and mudslide along the Nepal-China border on August 26, 2026. The event, which generated a seismic shock equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, sent a wall of water and debris through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. The disaster obliterated the Gyirong border crossing in Tibet and devastated the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts of Nepal, destroying 19 bridges, 40 kilometers of highway, and 14 hydropower projects.
Death tolls rose steadily as rescue operations progressed. By September 3, the total death toll reached at least 1,273, with 1,252 deaths reported in Nepal and 21 in China. Approximately 4,757 people remain missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals from over 30 countries and roughly 900 hydropower workers trapped in mud-filled tunnels. The Government of Nepal mobilized over 21,000 security personnel and coordinated with international experts from India, China, and South Korea to conduct subterranean rescues and forensic DNA identification.
International aid scaled up rapidly, with India delivering 60 tonnes of supplies and specialized tunnel teams, while the European Union organized a Humanitarian Air Bridge to Kathmandu. Tensions emerged as Nepali officials accused China of failing to provide early warnings, a claim the Chinese embassy rejected as "fake news," attributing the event to a glacier collapse on the Nepali side. Prime Minister Balendra Shah linked the disaster to climate change, estimating reconstruction costs between $4 billion and $5 billion.
