ERCOT Struggles to Manage AI Data Center Power Surge

The Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is struggling to manage a surge in energy demand as large load interconnection requests climbed from 56 gigawatts in September 2024 to 205 gigawatts recently. This growth is primarily driven by cryptocurrency mines and artificial intelligence data centers, the latter of which account for over 70% of these requests. The current volume of requested power is more than double the state's peak demand record of 85.5 gigawatts set in August 2023.

To maintain grid stability, ERCOT is considering updated planning procedures to evaluate multiple projects in single studies. The operator is also exploring quicker interconnection for users who agree to curtail power during periods of tight capacity. Regulators from the Public Utility Commission of Texas are attempting to provide developers with more certainty regarding approval timelines while addressing technical risks, such as whether data centers can ride through voltage disturbances without triggering wider outages.
