Dutch Central Bank Moves 86 Tons of Gold to London

De Nederlandsche Bank relocated gold reserves worth up to $12 billion from North America to London to improve liquidity and crisis preparedness.

The De Nederlandsche Bank relocated approximately 86 tons of gold reserves, valued between €10 billion and $12 billion, from the United States and Canada to London between March and August. The bank executed the move through a combination of physical transfers and a market swap, selling 59 tons in New York and purchasing an equivalent amount in London. Over 27 tons were physically moved from North America to a cash center in Zeist before arriving in London.

Bank officials cited increasing global geopolitical unrest and instability as the primary drivers for the relocation. By shifting these assets to the Bank of England, the bank aims to strengthen its resilience and improve the tradability of its reserves within the world's most liquid gold market. Following the transfer, London now holds the largest share of Dutch gold reserves at approximately 32%.

This strategic shift follows a similar pattern of reserve repatriation and relocation seen with the French central bank, which replaced its U.S. holdings with reserves in Paris.
