Canadian National Railway and Union Pacific Expand North American Connectivity

Canadian National Railway and Union Pacific Railroad signed a binding Memorandum of Understanding on July 22, 2026, to improve rail connectivity across North America. The reciprocal agreement grants Union Pacific expanded operating rights over the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway corridor in Chicago, while Canadian National Railway receives new rights over the Union Pacific network between Memphis, Tennessee, and Eagle Pass, Texas.

The deal aims to streamline freight movements between Canada and Mexico by providing customers with more route options and increasing overall rail competitiveness. Tracy Robinson, president and CEO of Canadian National Railway, described the agreement as a natural extension of the company's north-south franchise.

Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena noted the benefits of the Chicago bypass route for railroad efficiency. The companies intend for these expanded rights to foster growth and deliver more reliable service for customers moving goods across the three nations.
