NASA Awards Blue Origin $700 Million Mars Network Contract

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration awarded Blue Origin a firm-fixed-price contract worth up to $700 million on September 1, 2026, to develop the Mars Telecommunications Network. The project tasks the aerospace company with the design, development, launch, and operation of a high-performance telecommunications orbiter based on the Blue Ring spacecraft platform.

This dedicated orbiter will relay science data, imagery, and navigation information between Earth and Mars-based assets, replacing the agency's current reliance on aging orbiters that must divide resources between science collection and relay services. The network will be DTN-enabled, using a store-and-forward protocol to establish a Solar System Internet capable of routing communications despite interplanetary delays. The contract, funded through the Working Families Tax Cut Act, requires delivery of the spacecraft by December 31, 2028, with full operational status expected by 2030.

The initiative is part of the Space Communications and Navigation program and supports the Artemis program's goal of preparing for human exploration of Mars in the late 2030s or early 2040s. By leveraging private-sector capabilities for foundational infrastructure, the agency intends to shift its primary focus toward scientific discovery and deep space exploration.
