Wellstar Lays Off 761 Employees to Streamline Operations

Wellstar, a nonprofit health system in Georgia, is laying off 761 employees, which represents approximately 2% of its 35,000-person workforce. The reductions target corporate and shared service teams as well as administrative positions within the Wellstar Medical Group. These cuts aim to reduce costs, streamline operations, and simplify the organizational structure to ensure long-term sustainable growth.

System officials specified that doctors, nurses, and other clinical frontline care staff are not affected by the reductions. The organization stated that the changes will help clarify roles and move decision making closer to those providing patient care.

This workforce reduction occurs as the system continues to expand its facilities. Wellstar plans to finalize the acquisition of the Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Rabun County on August 1 and is scheduled to open a new 100-bed hospital in Columbia County on August 26.
