Mumbai Court Orders Asset Sale for NSEL Investor Restitution
A Mumbai special court authorized the sale of assets worth ₹3,464 crore to provide a ₹1,950 crore settlement for investors hit by the 2013 NSEL default.
A special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in Mumbai ruled on October 8, 2026, to permit the monetisation of assets worth approximately ₹3,464 crore. These assets were previously attached by the Enforcement Directorate through 35 separate orders issued since 2015.
The ruling enables a ₹1,950 crore one-time settlement for 5,682 specified creditors affected by the 2013 National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) payment default. The NSEL crisis originally impacted roughly 13,000 investors with outstanding dues of ₹5,600 crore resulting from commodity trading without underlying stocks. Under the approved scheme, eligible creditors will recover at least 42% of their verified claims.
Funds will be paid to 63 moons technologies ltd, acting as the assignee for the creditors, once a specific trigger event occurs. This settlement was previously sanctioned by the National Company Law Tribunal in November 2025 and upheld by the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal and the Supreme Court of India, which directed authorities in April 2026 to implement the plan expeditiously. Any proceeds from the asset sales exceeding ₹1,950 crore will remain in the custody of the special court pending final proceedings.
