Kim Long Motor and BYD Build $130 Million Battery Plant

Kim Long Motor and BYD Battery began construction of a $130 million electric vehicle battery plant in Hue City to boost Vietnam's local EV production.

Kim Long Motor and BYD Battery broke ground on January 27, 2026, for a $130 million electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in Hue City, Vietnam. Located within the Kim Long Motor automobile manufacturing and assembly industrial park in Chan May - Lang Co Commune, the project is funded by Kim Long Motor with technical support and technology transfer provided by BYD Battery.

The facility will be developed in two phases. The first phase covers 4.4 hectares with an annual capacity of 3 GWh, focusing on batteries for electric trucks, buses, and minivans. The second phase will expand the site to 10 hectares and double capacity to 6 GWh to include batteries for passenger cars. Kim Long Motor aims to increase its localization rate to over 80 percent by the second quarter of 2026.

For BYD, the plant serves as a localized strategy to capitalize on Vietnam's growing EV market and utilize free trade agreements with ASEAN and the European Union to export batteries with low or zero tariffs. The project is supported by the Hue People's Committee and the Government of Vietnam, which provides policy support for new energy vehicles.
