Investor Sentiment Hits 16-Month Low Amid Market Volatility

The American Association of Individual Investors reports bullish sentiment has fallen to a one-year low as investors increase cash holdings despite strong index performance.

The American Association of Individual Investors reported Friday that investor sentiment has dropped to a 16-month low. According to the latest survey, 53.3% of investors are bearish, while bullish sentiment has fallen to 28.8%, marking the lowest level in one year.

The spread between bulls and bears currently stands at -24.5%, which has remained below the historical average of 6.5% for nine consecutive weeks. This decline in confidence follows a period of volatility during the late summer, even though the S&P 500 Index has stayed within 2% of its all-time high.

Investor caution is further evidenced by cash allocations. Over half of the survey respondents reported holding larger-than-normal cash positions, with 19.1% stating their allocations are much higher than normal.
