ERP Vendors Integrate AI Agents to Execute Business Transactions

Major Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) vendors are shifting from AI that provides recommendations to agents capable of actively executing business transactions. SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, and Infor are embedding these agents into their application suites to automate core workflows, including the ability to alter purchase orders and move inventory.

This transition introduces significant governance risks because AI errors within ERP systems can result in immediate financial or operational losses. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend that Chief Information Officers establish strict decision rights to define which actions AI can perform independently and which require human intervention.

Industry providers are implementing these capabilities through various platforms. SAP is integrating Joule agents, while Oracle is extending its AI Agent Studio across Fusion Applications. Microsoft is opening Dynamics 365 ERP data and business logic to agents, and Infor is combining AI agents with process intelligence via its Velocity Suite. Other deployments include IFS AB's Digital Workers for industrial workflows and Cortisol's industry-focused agents within Prism.

The primary challenge for enterprises is evolving operating models and accountability structures. Without updated governance, there is a risk that automation will amplify existing process ambiguities within the organization.
