Israel and Lebanon to Resume Peace Talks in September

Israel and Lebanon will resume peace talks in early September after a round of discussions in Rome concluded on August 6. The negotiations, which first began in April, seek a comprehensive peace and security agreement that includes the disarmament of Hezbollah and a pilot program for Israeli withdrawal.

Recent discussions in Rome expanded to include a potential exchange of Lebanese prisoners held in Israel for the return of Jewish bodies buried in Beirut and Sidon. While the United States government remains optimistic about the progress of the talks, the process faces internal opposition within Lebanon.

Hezbollah has consistently opposed the direct negotiations. Secretary-General Naim Qassem denounced the talks as bringing "nothing but shame, humiliation, and successive compromises" for Lebanon and criticized President Joseph Aoun for his involvement in the process.
