Nigeria Public Debt Rises to N166.79 Trillion

Nigeria's total public debt increased to N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026, driven primarily by federal government borrowing.

The Debt Management Office reported that Nigeria's total public debt reached N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026. This figure marks a N7.44 trillion increase from the N159.35 trillion recorded at the end of the first quarter of 2026 and represents a 9.4 percent rise compared to June 2025. In dollar terms, the total public debt is valued at $120.93 billion.

The debt stock is divided between N91.59 trillion in domestic debt and N75.2 trillion in external debt. The Federal Government of Nigeria holds the vast majority of this burden at N152.77 trillion, while state governments and the Federal Capital Territory account for N14.01 trillion. Federal government bonds constitute the largest single debt category, totaling N64.84 trillion.

To calculate the external debt in local currency, the Debt Management Office utilized the Central Bank of Nigeria's official exchange rate of N1,379 per dollar.
