Independent Senate Candidates Challenge Republicans in Four States

Independent candidates in Nebraska, Montana, Idaho, and South Dakota are leveraging public frustration to challenge Republican incumbents in Trump-won territory.

Independent candidates for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska, Montana, Idaho, and South Dakota are challenging Republican incumbents by leveraging public frustration over affordability and declining approval ratings for President Donald Trump.

In Nebraska, Dan Osborn is running a populist campaign against the political establishment. The Nebraska Democratic Party has transparently backed Osborn to help deny Republicans a Senate majority, a strategy that prompted incumbent Senator Pete Ricketts to label him "Democrat Dan."

In Montana, independent candidate Seth Bodnar has received endorsements from prominent Democrats, creating friction within the state party. Democratic nominee Alani Bankhead has remained in the race despite alleged pressure from political figures to step aside for Bodnar, leading to accusations that her candidacy acts as a spoiler.

Both Osborn and Bodnar argue that their independent status allows them to provide common-sense solutions without being beholden to party leadership. While Osborn focuses on reclaiming the system for workers, Bodnar has stated he will not caucus with either major party upon arriving in Washington, D.C.
