Anthropic Launches Model Hardware Standard for AI Machinery

Anthropic announced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS) on Thursday, introducing a model-agnostic interface that allows AI agents to communicate with and operate physical machinery. Released as a research preview, the framework connects large language models to devices with programmable interfaces, including microscopes and robotic arms.

Developed in partnership with the HHMI Janelia Research Campus, the standard targets scientific research and advanced manufacturing. The company aims to reduce hardware integration timelines from months to minutes, facilitating autonomous, round-the-clock workflows. MHS is currently available to a select group of partners, including Amazon Web Services and Genentech.

Anthropic plans to open-source the standard following the completion of safety evaluations. This initiative marks the company's expansion into physical AI and hardware, occurring alongside its efforts to establish a custom silicon team for chip design.
