Micron Shares Fall After China's CXMT Announces New DRAM Design
Micron Technology shares dropped 5 percent after ChangXin Memory Technologies announced progress on a denser next-generation DRAM architecture for server-memory products.
Micron Technology Inc. shares fell approximately 5 percent on Tuesday, extending a decline that began Monday. The sell-off followed an announcement from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China's largest DRAM producer, regarding progress on a next-generation 4F-square cell DRAM architecture. CXMT intends to launch a server-memory product based on this denser design later this year.
The news triggered investor concerns over future pricing pressure and increased competition, which also impacted South Korean memory makers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The market reaction comes despite Micron reporting strong fiscal 2026 results driven by AI demand and its ongoing expansion of U.S. manufacturing facilities supported by the CHIPS Act.
Analysts suggest the stock drop reflects a broader market vulnerability regarding AI sentiment. They note that CXMT has not yet demonstrated large-scale production of the new design and that U.S. and Korean firms maintain a lead in high-bandwidth memory specifically for AI applications.
