DoorDash CEO Tony Xu Urges Entrepreneurs to Avoid Ambition Caps

DoorDash CEO Tony Xu advised entrepreneurs to adopt a greedy algorithm and maintain expansive ambitions to scale businesses toward billion-dollar valuations.

DoorDash CEO Tony Xu recently urged entrepreneurs to adopt a "greedy algorithm" and avoid capping their ambitions. Speaking on the Uncapped with Jack Altman podcast, Xu noted that he conservatively estimated DoorDash's potential revenue at $100 million during the company's 2013 Y Combinator application. DoorDash surpassed that annual figure by 2018 and reported $4 billion in revenue for the first quarter of 2026, with 933 million total orders across the United States and 40 other countries.

Xu's perspective on scaling businesses to billion-dollar valuations aligns with other prominent founders. Danny Rensch of Chess.com, George Arison of Grindr, and serial entrepreneur Mike Repole all characterize traits such as being "delusional," "crazy," or "arrogant" as necessary prerequisites for success. Repole specifically identified the first five years of entrepreneurship as survival years where bankruptcy is a daily possibility.
