Minnesota Primary Sees Record 1.1 Million Ballots Cast

Minnesota achieved a record-breaking voter turnout during the August 11, 2026, primary election, with more than 1,103,000 ballots cast. This is the first time in state history that primary turnout exceeded 1 million votes, surpassing the previous record of 925,554 set in 2018.

Steve Simon, the Minnesota Secretary of State, reported that approximately 25% of eligible voters participated in contests for governor, the U.S. Senate, Congress, and state legislative offices. Simon noted that the turnout demonstrated how Minnesotans value democracy and urged citizens to prepare for the general election on November 3.

County officials are currently reviewing and certifying the unofficial results. These findings will be presented to the State Canvassing Board on August 18, 2026.
