Memory and Storage Stocks Fall as Investors Shift Assets
Shares of Micron, SanDisk, Western Digital, and Seagate have declined from recent peaks as investors move toward Bitcoin and other assets amid macroeconomic concerns.
Shares of major memory and storage companies, including Micron Technology Inc., SanDisk Corp., Western Digital Corp., and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc, have lost significant momentum and fallen from their recent peaks. SanDisk and Western Digital saw declines of more than 30%, while Micron and Seagate dropped roughly 20%.
Investors are shifting capital toward other assets, such as Bitcoin and Moderna Inc., driven by macroeconomic concerns. Rising interest rates have increased financing costs for AI infrastructure, leaving high-valuation tech stocks vulnerable to spikes in Treasury yields. A chief investment strategist at MoneyFlows characterized the shift as smart money moving on from memory stocks.
Despite the price drops, underlying fundamentals remain strong. Major AI spenders, including Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Alphabet Inc., and Meta Platforms Inc., remain committed to their capital expenditure plans. While some analysts suggest investor excitement for the AI trade has peaked, others, including the CEO of Roundhill Financial Inc., argue the sector is trading on positioning while fundamentals continue to strengthen, presenting an enhanced buying opportunity due to low earnings multiples.
