Tesla Ordered to Pay $242.5 Million in Autopilot Crash Trial

A federal jury in Miami found Tesla partially responsible for a vehicle crash that killed Naibel Benavides Leon and seriously injured Dillon Angulo. The jury ordered the company to pay more than $242.5 million in damages, marking the first time plaintiffs have won a trial against the company regarding its Autopilot system.

Plaintiffs' attorneys argued that Tesla's decisions to overstate and overhype its technology led drivers to over-rely on the system, citing systemic failures rather than isolated mechanical errors. The case raised specific concerns regarding the limitations of over-the-air software updates when applied to older hardware.
