Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is developing orbital AI compute capabilities through its Starmind AI1 satellites. The system utilizes Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs provided by NVIDIA Corporation to process artificial intelligence workloads in space.
The initiative seeks to circumvent intensifying bipartisan political opposition to terrestrial data centers within the United States. Recent polling indicates that 75% of Americans now oppose the construction of local data centers, creating significant regulatory and social headwinds for ground-based infrastructure.
Critics suggest that the rapid obsolescence of hardware makes space-based computing economically risky. However, SpaceX maintains that the rapid reusability of Starship could reduce launch costs by 99% compared to historical benchmarks, potentially making orbital infrastructure cost-competitive with terrestrial alternatives.
Institutional investors have responded positively to the strategy. ARK Invest added approximately $27 million in SpaceX shares on August 21, and other hedge funds continue to increase their positions in the company.
