Former New Zealand Speaker Adrian Rurawhe Dies at 64

Adrian Paki Rurawhe, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Member of Parliament for Te Tai Hauāuru, died on September 29, 2026, at Rātana Pā following a recent illness. Rurawhe served in Parliament from 2014 until his retirement in January 2026, distinguishing himself as only the second person of Māori descent to be appointed Speaker.

Beyond his legislative role, Rurawhe was a Rangatira of Ngāti Apa and the leader of the Rātana faith. Political leaders from the Labour and Green parties praised his ability to bring calm to the House and his reputation for honesty and dignity. Chris Hipkins noted that members of all parties sought Rurawhe's counsel, while Willie Jackson described him as a humble man dedicated to the service of his people.

Rurawhe will lie in state at Whangaehu Marae before his burial at Ngā Puketuurua Ratana Pa.
