Police Restrain Hunger Striking Leader During Ranchi Protests

Police personnel at Sadar Hospital in Ranchi forcibly restrained Devendra Nath Mahto, leader of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha, on August 15, 2026. Mahto, who was on the 14th day of an indefinite hunger strike, was prevented from joining a Tiranga Yatra. He alleged that police dragged him back into his room and clashed with supporters, despite his having provided an undertaking that the hospital administration would not be held responsible for his health issues.

The detention occurred amid large-scale protests at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, where thousands of students demanded action regarding alleged recruitment irregularities by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission.

Jharkhand Congress leader Kumar Raja defended the police action, stating that Mahto's health was a higher priority than political points and accused the BJP of politicizing the situation. In response to the broader unrest, Chief Minister Hemant Soren pledged that transparent examination processes would be ensured. Soren also announced the launch of 'Chhatron Ki Baat - Chhatron Ke Sath' to collect student suggestions for improving the state education system.
