Tesla Proposes $10.1 Billion Solar Factory in Texas
Tesla proposed a $10.1 billion solar manufacturing facility in Fort Bend County, Texas, as part of a broader goal to produce 100 GW of solar power annually.
Tesla has proposed the construction of a $10.1 billion solar factory in Fort Bend County, Texas, under the code name Project Crystal Sun. According to a tax-incentive application, the facility will manufacture photovoltaic solar cells and assembled solar modules. The company expects to employ over 9,700 full-time workers, with construction slated to begin in 2026 and conclude in 2028.
Commercial operations are expected to start in the first quarter of 2029. CEO Elon Musk stated that Tesla and SpaceX are working separately to manufacture 100 GW of solar power annually in the United States, a goal he believes will take approximately three years to achieve.
Tesla is currently seeking state and local tax incentives to make the Texas site viable. The company noted that it is considering another U.S. location and that the competitiveness of the Fort Bend County project depends on the approval of these incentives.
