India Smartphone Shipments Hit Decade Low in Third Quarter
Samsung regained market leadership in India as total smartphone shipments fell 26% to 35.8 million units, the lowest third-quarter volume since 2016.
Smartphone shipments in India fell 26% year-on-year to 35.8 million units in the third quarter of 2026, marking the lowest volume for that period since 2016. Samsung reclaimed the top market position for the first time since early 2024, shipping 6.7 million units. The decline was driven by higher device prices, cautious consumer spending, and a later Diwali date that shifted festive inventory build-up from September into October.
Chinese manufacturers saw their combined market share drop from 75% to approximately 68% as they struggled with rising component costs and a lack of affordable models. Vivo fell to second place after experiencing the sharpest decline among top vendors with a 34% drop in shipments. Oppo ranked third with 4.9 million units, a 24% decrease, while Xiaomi placed fourth with 4.7 million units, down 28%.
Apple rounded out the top five with 3.9 million units, supported by demand for iPhone 16 and 17 models. While Samsung and Apple leveraged premium portfolios and upgrade programs to gain ground, other vendors faced headwinds from price hikes. Research firm Omdia predicts the Indian market will contract by a low-single-digit percentage in 2027 as consumers hold onto devices longer and pricing pressures persist.
