US Initial Jobless Claims Rise Modestly to 199,000
The United States Department of Labor reported initial jobless claims rose to 199,000, suggesting labor market stability that limits the case for Federal Reserve policy easing.
The United States Department of Labor reported that initial jobless claims increased modestly to 199,000 for the week ending October 10. This figure fell slightly below the estimated 200,000. While unadjusted filings rose by 11.4%, the increase aligned closely with seasonal expectations of 11.0% and remained lower than the figures recorded during the same week in the previous year.
Continuing claims for the week ending October 3 decreased to 1.71 million, while the insured unemployment rate remained unchanged at 1.1%. These metrics indicate that layoffs are not increasing meaningfully across the economy.
The stability of the labor market provides the Federal Reserve System with limited justification to ease monetary policy based on labor market weakness alone.
