Siegfried Muresan Seeks Parliamentary Majority Amid PSD Opposition

Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan began presenting his governing program to parliamentary groups on September 22, 2026, in an effort to secure the 233 votes required for investiture. Designated by President Nicușor Dan on September 17, Muresan held a series of meetings with the National Liberal Party of Romania, the Save Romania Union, and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania to discuss government priorities and the ministerial list.

The process faces significant opposition from the Social Democratic Party of Romania. The party's National Standing Bureau decided not to support the government, though it previously indicated it might do so if ten specific proposals from Sinaia were incorporated into the program. The National Liberal Party of Romania has accused the Social Democratic Party of Romania of deepening the national political crisis through this refusal.

In response to the deadlock, leaders Sorin Grindeanu and Kelemen Hunor suggested that Muresan return his mandate to avoid a disastrous collapse in Parliament. Muresan rejected these suggestions, characterizing the opposition as a test of truth and pledging a government focused on transparency, the reform of state-owned companies, and a voluntary merger of communes. While seeking a broad majority, Muresan explicitly stated he would not meet with the Alliance for the Union of Romanians.
