Scottish Labour Leadership Race Amid Financial Crisis

The Scottish Labour Party is conducting a leadership contest to succeed Anas Sarwar amid a period of severe financial instability and electoral decline. Recent accounts reveal the party's income fell to £1.5 million from £2.1 million last year, necessitating financial assistance from the UK Labour party to remain a going concern. This crisis follows the party's worst electoral performance since 1999, with its parliamentary presence dropping to 17 seats in the May 2026 elections.

Three candidates are competing for the leadership: Monica Lennon, Michael Marra, and Joe Fagan. Monica Lennon has characterized the party as having "turned to rubble" after 19 years of opposition and six Holyrood defeats. While the trade union Unison has endorsed Lennon following an online hustings, she currently lacks the necessary support from parliamentarians to officially enter the race. Labour MP Jon Trickett has called for her to be placed on the ballot.

Other contenders are offering different paths to renewal. Joe Fagan is advocating for community wealth building to restore the party as a champion of public services and local government. Michael Marra has pledged to devolve power to local party members and activists to reverse the party's long-term organizational decline. The contest occurs as the party struggles with low membership, estimated between 12,295 and 13,500 members.
