Karen Bass Faces Tight Re-election Race in Los Angeles
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is locked in a dead heat with challenger Nithya Raman as voters prioritize housing and cost of living.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing a competitive re-election challenge from Nithya Raman, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Recent polling indicates the race is a dead heat after Bass closed an 11-point deficit. The campaign has shifted toward issues of housing affordability and the cost of living, moving away from the social justice movements that previously defined the political landscape.
Bass is campaigning on her infrastructure and homelessness records, while framing Raman as naive and risky. However, she faces criticism from the left for maintaining the current police chief and increasing police budgets. She also faces scrutiny for being on a diplomatic trip to Ghana during the Palisades fires, later stating, "I am so profoundly sorry that I was not in my city when my city needed me."
Raman has encountered her own challenges, including backlash over a gaffe regarding former LAPD Chief Daryl Gates and a perceived lack of knowledge regarding city history. While the Los Angeles Police Protective League spent nearly $3 million opposing Raman, the Democratic Socialists of America have considered rescinding their endorsement of Raman due to her stance on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. Melina Abdullah, co-founder of Los Angeles Black Lives Matter, criticized Bass for betraying the goals of the 2020 protests.
