Abinader Urges UN to Fully Deploy Haiti Security Mission

President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic urged the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday to accelerate the deployment of the international security mission in Haiti. Addressing the assembly, Abinader called for the full deployment of the authorized 5,550 personnel, stricter enforcement of the arms embargo, and the implementation of sanctions against those financing gangs.

Abinader warned that renewing the mission's mandate, which expires next week, without completing the deployment would be to "prolong an unfulfilled promise." He cited a recent attack in Kenscoff that killed at least 47 people as evidence of the crisis's severity.

While the Dominican Republic has provided financial and logistical support, Abinader stated that "there is no Dominican solution" to the crisis. He affirmed that Santo Domingo will continue to enforce migration laws and protect its border against national security threats stemming from the unrest in Haiti.
