Citizens Advice Urges UK Firms to Limit AI Chatbots
Citizens Advice is calling on UK essential service providers to guarantee a right to human contact to protect digitally excluded citizens from AI chatbot loops.
The charity Citizens Advice has urged essential service providers in the United Kingdom to stop over-relying on AI chatbots for customer care and to guarantee customers the right to talk to a human. Research from the organization indicates that AI-powered systems in the banking, energy, and telecommunications sectors often trap users in endless loops, delaying problem resolution for more than half of users.
This digital shift creates a two-tier support system that disproportionately affects an estimated 14 million digitally excluded UK citizens. While online resolutions can take an hour, offline alternatives often take weeks. The charity warned that this reliance on digital-only applications is particularly dangerous for vulnerable people seeking homelessness prevention services.
The Government of the United Kingdom has invested 11.9 million pounds in a digital inclusion innovation fund to address these gaps. A government spokesperson stated that businesses have a legal obligation to provide contact information that is clear and easily accessible.
