Trump Officials Face Scrutiny Over AI Land Deals

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and other administration officials face conflict-of-interest allegations for promoting AI data centers on federal lands while holding millions in AI investments.

U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and several other Trump administration officials are facing scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest regarding the promotion of AI data centers on federal public lands. Financial disclosures indicate that Burgum holds between $18.1 million and $64.4 million in AI investments through Arthur Ventures. Other officials with significant AI-related assets include Bureau of Land Management Director Steve Pearce and USDA Undersecretary Michael Boren.

The administration has compared the build-out of AI infrastructure to the Manhattan Project. To support this goal, the Interior Department identified over 91 million acres of public land as potentially suitable for data centers. In a related effort to accelerate development, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin proposed rules to reduce public feedback requirements for air permits associated with these facilities.

Democratic senators have demanded transparency and the immediate cessation of efforts to utilize public lands for these projects. Administration spokespeople have defended the officials, stating that all individuals have complied with federal ethics and disclosure obligations.
