Springdale Police Chief Defends License Plate Reader Use

Police Chief Derek Wright presented the Springdale Police Department's use of Flock automated license plate readers to the Springdale City Council on Tuesday. The department currently operates 10 cameras to assist in solving crimes involving stolen vehicles, shootings, and human trafficking.

To address privacy concerns, Wright detailed several safeguards, including a 30-day data retention limit and the requirement for written justification and a case number for all searches. He noted that supervisors and the chief conduct audits and clarified that federal agencies do not have direct access to the data. Sharing information with other local agencies requires specific investigative justification.

While Wright admitted that "the technology is intrusive," he emphasized its utility in criminal investigations. Local resident Charles Farmer expressed support for the system's continued use, provided the department maintains transparency through regular auditing and annual public reporting to the City Council.
