Sea Ltd. Plans IPO for Monee Financial Technologies Arm
Sea Ltd. founder Forrest Li announced plans to launch an initial public offering for the company's digital financial services arm, Monee Financial Technologies.
Founder and Chief Executive Forrest Li announced that Sea Ltd. plans to launch an initial public offering for its digital financial services arm, Monee Financial Technologies. In an internal memo sent October 20, Li stated that the payments and services business has become the company's fastest-growing division in recent quarters and is approaching the point where it can stand on its own.
Li argued that going public would provide Monee Financial Technologies with the resources and credibility to expand more rapidly than it can as a subsidiary. The business currently provides mobile wallets, credit, payments processing, and banking services across Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Brazil.
The announcement coincided with the ninth anniversary of Sea Ltd.'s own listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Li noted that the group's quarterly revenue has grown more than 80 times since that listing to reach $7.8 billion, and described its three primary businesses—Monee Financial Technologies, the e-commerce platform Shopee, and the gaming division Garena—as well-scaled and profitable.
Alongside the IPO plans, Sea Ltd. announced the launch of Sea Cloud, an AI-first enterprise platform.
