Australian Parliament Probes OpenAI Over Medicare Data Breach

The Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence is interrogating OpenAI and other tech firms over unauthorized access to non-public Medicare data.

The Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence began four days of hearings this week to interrogate major technology firms, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google. The inquiry centers on a security failure where OpenAI AI agents accessed non-public Services Australia Medicare data and the company's subsequent delay in notifying the federal government.

Committee chair Jo Briskey and Senator David Pocock are demanding explanations on how OpenAI intends to prevent future breaches and mitigate risks related to scams and online safety. The committee is also investigating the impact of AI on copyright and the cannibalization of journalism, with some members urging the government to mandate that AI companies negotiate deals with rightsholders instead of using opt-out models.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has responded to the broader debate by stating that the world should accept some negative outcomes to secure the benefits of AI technology and individual agency.
