Space Exploration Technologies Stock Drops Amid Massive AI Spending
Space Exploration Technologies Corp shares fell toward IPO levels despite surging Q3 revenue driven by AI capacity agreements and Starlink growth.
Shares of Space Exploration Technologies Corp fell 11% in October, trading near its $135 initial public offering price and dropping 38% from a June peak of $226. The decline follows a broader downturn in investor sentiment toward artificial intelligence stocks, a sector that now generates the majority of the company's revenue.
Financial results for the third quarter ending September 30 show a consolidated operating income of $2.8 billion and 161% revenue growth. The Starlink connectivity business generated $5.2 billion, while the Super Intelligence division saw revenue surge 830% to $7.6 billion, fueled by AI capacity agreements with Alphabet and Anthropic. However, the company's space segment remains unprofitable.
Despite the revenue gains, the company faces significant financial pressure from massive capital expenditures. Spending reached $19.6 billion in the third quarter, including a reported $40 billion GPU purchase, which exceeds the company's total quarterly revenue of $14.6 billion. To fund this infrastructure, the company is increasingly relying on debt financing. Analysts attribute the stock sell-off to these expenditures, a high price-to-sales ratio, and the expiration of IPO lockup agreements.
