Atlassian Launches Protocol to Enforce Human AI Accountability

Atlassian cofounder Mike Cannon-Brookes introduced a new protocol to ensure AI agent actions in the workplace are attributed to human users.

Atlassian cofounder Mike Cannon-Brookes is advocating for strict human accountability and transparency regarding the use of AI agents in professional environments. To implement this, Atlassian launched the Agentic Multiplayer Protocol on October 6, creating a control plane that treats AI agents as governed members of work teams with distinct profiles and owner attribution.

Cannon-Brookes argues that AI edits in documents must be attributed to the human user to prevent employees from using the phrase "the AI did it" as a professional excuse. He distinguishes the requirements for workplace security, permissions, and compliance from those of consumer AI products, which he claims often obscure complex background operations.

This initiative builds on the 2024 launch of Rovo, an AI assistant that integrates company knowledge across various platforms. The push toward AI and enterprise sales follows a 10% workforce reduction in March. The Sydney-based company recently reported $1.8 billion in revenue for the quarter ending June 30.
