Tribal Activist Nisha Bhagat Dies by Suicide in Jharkhand
Tribal activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat died by suicide in Ranchi after accusing the Hemant Soren government and land mafias of harassment in a Facebook Live video.
Tribal leader and social activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat died by suicide at her residence in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on November 6, 2026. Before her death, Bhagat broadcast an 11-minute Facebook Live video in which she accused the Hemant Soren-led government, local land mafias, and the Pithoria police station in-charge of harassment and systemic apathy. She claimed that defending tribal rights and opposing land brokers meant "inviting death" and stated she could not bear the humiliation inflicted by the administration.
Police found Bhagat hanging from a ceiling fan and registered an unnatural death case. While the Jharkhand Police are conducting a forensic investigation and post-mortem at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, no suicide note was recovered. The incident has sparked intense political conflict, with the Bharatiya Janata Party and Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi demanding Chief Minister Hemant Soren's immediate resignation.
Opposition leaders, including Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and BJP state president Aditya Sahu, have called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, criticizing the police for failing to intervene during the real-time broadcast. Bhagat's father, Handu Bhagat, also demanded a CBI inquiry. In response, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha spokesperson Manoj Pandey urged trust in the local police investigation, noting that Bhagat's final statements also mentioned the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
