Russia Deploys Acoustic Drones to Block Ukrainian Logistics
The Military of Russia is landing drones in concealed urban locations to act as acoustic sensors that detect and target Ukrainian vehicle movements.
The Military of Russia has implemented a new drone tactic to restrict Ukrainian vehicle movement within contested gray zones, specifically in urban areas of Donetsk Oblast. Rather than maintaining continuous aerial patrols, Russian forces are landing drones in concealed spots such as high-rise buildings, courtyards, and public transportation stops to serve as stationary acoustic sensors.
These waiting drones use microphones to detect the sound of passing vehicles without needing a direct line of sight, which allows them to conserve power and remain hidden from detection. Once a vehicle is identified, the drone can either strike the target directly or alert an operator to coordinate artillery fire or deploy additional strike drones.
Sergii Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian president on defense technology development, first identified the tactic. The use of these drones on high-rise buildings was further reported by Vitalii Piasetskyi, a first sergeant in Ukraine's 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade. This low-cost area denial method complicates efforts by the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine to move resupply vehicles and armored fighting vehicles through contested routes, hindering mechanized assaults and logistics in no-man's-land.
