India Receives 4,895 Crore FDI Under Revised Investment Rules

The Government of India processed 29 foreign direct investment projects totaling Rs 4,895.65 crore following a policy shift easing restrictions on Chinese shareholding.

The Government of India has processed 29 foreign direct investment projects totaling approximately Rs 4,895.65 crore under a revised investment framework as of August 20, 2026. These investments target high-growth sectors including artificial intelligence, information technology, pharmaceuticals, and data centers.

The funding originates from several jurisdictions, including the United States, Japan, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Mauritius, Luxembourg, and the Cayman Islands. The surge follows amendments to the Foreign Exchange Management Act and the Foreign Exchange Management (Non-debt Instruments) Rules 2019, notified on May 1, 2026, via Press Note 2 of 2026.

The policy change removes the requirement for prior government approval for overseas companies with up to 10 percent shareholding from countries sharing a land border with India, provided the entities are not registered in China, Hong Kong, or other bordering nations. By allowing these investors to use the automatic route, the government aims to reduce transaction times and address investor concerns regarding the restrictive 2020 guidelines to improve the overall ease of doing business.
