This shift aligns with recent statements from U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who noted in an August 9 interview that she and other progressives have moved away from pandemic-era rhetoric regarding police and prison abolition. New York City Councilman Chi Ossé supported this transition, using the term Woke 1 to describe the perceived excesses of that period.

The pivot follows a trend among progressives to distance themselves from controversial cultural positions after Republicans framed such views as radical during the 2024 elections. However, the reversals have drawn criticism from abolitionist organizers and the Democratic Socialists of America, who argue that dismissing these movements as temporary pandemic rhetoric undermines the goals of grassroots activists.
