Optical Transceiver Industry Faces Severe Laser and Wafer Shortage

This shortage is expected to last until mid-2027, though the market intelligence firm warned that customer double ordering may be inflating backlogs, similar to trends observed in 2000 and 2001.
Geopolitical risks dominate the sector due to a heavy reliance on China for wafer production and Beijing export permits. AXT Inc maintains significant scarcity value but remains dependent on Chinese operations. In contrast, IQE plc and Korea Zinc Co., Ltd. have emerged as non-Chinese alternatives; IQE plc recently raised its 2026 growth guidance to over 30%, while Korea Zinc Co., Ltd. is developing a $7.4 billion smelter in Tennessee after acquiring Nyrstar's U.S. assets.
To mitigate potential supply disruptions, the United States Defense Logistics Agency has requested bids to stockpile up to 403 tons of indium over three years. This amount represents more than a third of the annual global output of the material. Meanwhile, Lumentum Holdings Inc. is guiding for revenue growth between $960 million and $1.01 billion.
