Fife Council Approves Uber Taxi Office Despite 431 Objections

The Fife Council Licensing and Regulation Committee approved an application by Uber Scot Ltd to establish a taxi operating office at the Rosyth Business Centre on the Cromarty Campus. The decision came after the committee dismissed 431 objections submitted by local taxi drivers, operators, and associations who argued that the company's entry into the market would harm existing firms.

Legal counsel from both the council and Uber Scot Ltd determined that the protests were legally incompetent. Council solicitor Kimberley Langer and Uber solicitor Kevin Clancy noted that the objections failed to meet legislative requirements, specifically lacking the necessary hand-written or electronic signatures and required specific details.

Following these legal opinions, Committee Convener Tom Adams moved a motion to proceed with the application, stating that without valid objections, the matter would have typically been handled under delegated powers. The motion was seconded by Councillor Donald Lothian and subsequently approved by the committee.
