UK Home Office Deploys Facial Recognition for Immigration Crackdown

The UK Home Office is using live facial recognition at transport hubs to identify unlawful immigrants and those subject to removal.

The UK Home Office is deploying live facial recognition (LFR) technology at public events and transport hubs to identify individuals attempting to re-enter the United Kingdom unlawfully or those subject to removal actions. The program targets people committing immigration-related crimes as well as those who overstayed visas or entered without leave, which are typically treated as civil matters.

This surveillance expansion follows a decision by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to double the immigration enforcement budget and increase the workforce by 60% to facilitate more deportations and raids. The Home Office asserts that LFR technology reduces public disruption compared to traditional residential raids.

Civil liberties groups have condemned the deployment as a shocking escalation of mass surveillance, citing a lack of transparency and legislation. Biometrics and surveillance camera commissioner William Webster stated he was not consulted on the policy, noting that its use for immigration purposes falls outside his remit.
