Azerbaijan Central Bank Details Energy Price Impact on Economy

Taleh Kazimov reports that rising oil and gas prices boost Azerbaijan's current account balance while increasing risks of imported inflation.

Taleh Kazimov, Chairman of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, reported that increases in global energy prices significantly boost the national current account balance. According to Kazimov, a $10 rise in oil prices improves the balance by approximately $1.2 billion, while a $50 increase in the price of 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas adds $900 million.

Despite these gains, Kazimov warned that energy price hikes create domestic price pressures through imported inflation. Because 80% of Azerbaijan's non-energy imports come from energy-importing economies, a 10% rise in oil prices increases inflation among the country's trading partners by roughly 0.67%.

Kazimov identified exchange rate stability as the cornerstone of the nation's monetary policy. He reported that Azerbaijan's strategic reserves reached $85.8 billion by the end of June, a figure exceeding 125% of the country's gross domestic product.
