Digital News Site Salon Announces Immediate Closure
Salon announced its immediate closure on Thursday, citing a business model that is no longer sustainable for independent digital journalism.
Salon, a progressive news and opinion website founded in 1995, announced its immediate closure on Thursday, November 5, 2026. In an unsigned announcement, the publication stated that its publishing model is "no longer sustainable" due to profound changes in the realities of independent digital journalism.
Chief Content Officer Erin Keane confirmed that the editorial team received notification of the closure on Thursday morning. Founded by David Talbot as a digital magazine for books and culture, the site eventually expanded into politics and technology, employing journalists such as Glenn Greenwald and Jake Tapper.
The publication underwent several ownership changes over three decades. It was sold to Chris Richmond and Drew Schoentrup in 2019 before being acquired in November 2023 by Find.co, a Malta-based performance marketing company specializing in crypto brands.
