South Korean Unification Minister Denies US Alliance Strains
Unification Minister Chung Dong-young rejected reports of deteriorating ties with the United States and dismissed claims of restricted intelligence sharing as based on misunderstandings.
South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young rejected claims of deterioration in the South Korea-US alliance during a press conference in Seoul on Monday. Chung dismissed reports that a visiting US intelligence official bypassed the South Korean intelligence chief, labeling such claims as "completely fake news." He argued that disagreements over national interests are natural among allies and maintained that the alliance remains sound.
Addressing reports that the United States restricted intelligence sharing with Seoul following his March disclosure of information regarding a North Korean facility, Chung described the US response as a "wrong measure." He stated the restriction was based on a misunderstanding of his previous public remarks.
Chung also defended the Ministry of Unification against accusations that it is taking an overly conciliatory stance toward Pyongyang. This follows his cautious characterization of mine explosions that occurred in the Demilitarized Zone on September 21. He rejected the notion that his ministry is adopting a low-handed posture, asserting that the government is taking the proper approach.
