Joint Parliamentary Committee Reviews One Nation One Election in Lucknow
The Joint Parliamentary Committee conducted stakeholder consultations in Lucknow to finalize a report on synchronizing national and state elections by July 17.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) conducted a series of consultations and a study visit in Lucknow, India, between July 12 and July 14, 2026. The committee is gathering nationwide feedback to finalize its report on the 'One Nation, One Election' framework, which seeks to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha and all state legislative assemblies.
During the visit, JPC Chairperson Prem Prakash Chaudhary and other members held informal discussions with the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police, and the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh. The committee is scrutinizing the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, both introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 17, 2024.
Committee members argued that the current electoral cycle causes governance disruptions and stalls investments due to the repeated imposition of the Model Code of Conduct. While Anurag Thakur noted that some political parties fear national issues might overshadow regional concerns, Prem Prakash Chaudhary maintained that there is overwhelming support for ending the state of permanent election mode. Member Anil Desai participated in the sessions to discuss the necessary constitutional and legal amendments.
The JPC expects to finalize and adopt its formal report during a meeting on July 17, after which it will be submitted to Parliament for further consideration.
