Apple Develops iPhone-Windows Clipboard Sync for EU Market

Apple Inc. is developing a cross-device clipboard syncing feature that will allow users to copy and paste text and supported media between iPhones and Windows PCs. The project follows an interoperability request from Microsoft submitted in March 2026 under the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates that platforms provide better access to third-party developers and services.

To bypass privacy restrictions that block background clipboard access, Apple will utilize its AccessorySetupKit framework to treat paired Windows PCs as trusted accessories. This approach requires users to grant a one-time permission to pair devices, using a new extension to share pasteboard items similar to frameworks introduced in iOS 26.5.

Apple has characterized the project as a "significant engineering effort" and does not expect development to conclude until fall 2027. The rollout is expected to begin with a developer beta, potentially leading to a public release in early 2028 tied to iOS 28. Because the development is driven by the DMA and a court defeat regarding interoperability obligations, the functionality may be limited to users within the European Union, although no technical barriers to a global release have been identified.
